The Prepositions

What can you find in this blog?

In this blog you can find information about the prepositions, for example the definition how you can used it, characteristics, Types and the function, this image explains what prepositions are

Before i begin i going to leave a video demostrating the basics about prepositions, like: what is a preposition? and, which are the most useful prepositions.

Introduction

A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words in a sentence. The word or phrase that the preposition introduces is called the object of the preposition. Prepositions work with other words in prepositional phrases. A prepositional phrase usually indicates where (by showing direction or location), how (in what way or by what means), or when (at what time or how long) the action in the sentence took place.
Prepositions are hard for most students. Why? Because there are hardly any rules as to when to use which preposition. The only way to learn prepositions is looking them up in a dictionary, reading a lot in English and memorizing useful phrases.

Definition of preposition

a function word that typically combines with a noun phrase to form a phrase which usually expresses a modification or predication

What exactly is a preposition?

A preposition is a word—and almost always a very small, very common word—that shows direction (to in "a letter to you"), location (at in "at the door"), or time (by in "by noon"), or that introduces an object (of in "a basket of apples"). Prepositions are typically followed by an object, which can be a noun (noon), a noun phrase (the door), or a pronoun (you).

Uses of a preposition

Prepositions are always used to indicate the relationship of a noun or phrase to something else. When using a preposition, you must always have the subject and verb before it, and follow it with a noun. You should never follow it with a verb!

Let’s take a look at some examples and how they can be used!

“He put the tiles on the wrong wall.”

“She is going to college in September.”

“I’ll meet you at 5.30.”

Types of prepositions

  1. Simple Prepositions — are the most common prepositions; they include: in, on, of, at, from, among, between, over, with, through, and without.
  2. Compound Prepositions — are usually a combination of two prepositions used together as one; they include: into, onto / on to (on to is British English, onto is American English), out of.
  3. Complex prepositions — These are two or three word phrase that functions in the same way as a simple preposition, they include: according to, as well as, except for, in favor of, etc.

Function of prepositions

Prepositions function as connectors, relating one word to another within a sentence. They allow a speaker or writer to express the link between separate items. Prepositions can convey information about location, time, or direction or provide details.

Conclusion

In this section, we learned all about the preposition, whose primary role in life is to stick nouns on sentences. We met three basic kinds: simple, marginal, and compound. We learned that the preposition, when it sticks a noun on a sentence, forms a structure called the prepositional phrase. The noun stuck on the sentence is the object of the preposition. And if you stick a personal pronoun on a sentence with a preposition, that pronoun must appear in the objective case. And we learned that a preposition is often a good word to end a sentence with.
